It's not helpful to point fingers
during the war against the common enemy. But I couldn't help to
wonder why and how things could go so wrong this time. The only way to
remotely gain some understanding is to study the history. Here (link below) is the 2009
H1N1 Pandemic Timeline. Yes, H1N1 is a different virus... but we will
never be better if we keep trying to find excuses for ourselves.
1. 10 days after the first case being detected in California, WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern.
2. 15 days after the first
case being detected in California, WHO signaled a pandemic was
imminent, urged all countries to activate their pandemic preparedness
plans.
3. 20 days after the first case being detected in California, 980 schools in the US were closed.
4. From 4/2009 to 4/2010, total H1N1 infected cases in the US were 61 million, total deaths were about 13,000.
