As mentioned to you before, I came to the Big Island with one hopeful
image in my head -- the red-hot lava flowing into the ocean!
I
talked to friends and searched online to discover different ways to
photograph this amazing scenery, and I was fully
prepared to do whatever it takes to capture the image... However, when
we arrived in the Big Island, we learned that the lava had stopped
flowing into the ocean about 3 months ago in September 2013. Really?
Why?? After
flowing into the ocean every minute of every day for almost 30 years,
it just had to stop flowing 3 months before I got there? Really??
Why????
You know, as I
look back on life, I've come to realize that not once, not twice, but
many times, I find myself arriving in a perfectly wonderful
place just a tiny bit too late!!!
So,
we went to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park to see Kilauea Volcano.
Not nearly as dramatic as the flowing lava, but if I tell you there is
no drama in my life, I would be lying to you.
As
I remember, it was an activity-packed busy day. We went to many
interesting places including the black sand beach and green sand beach.
On our way back, we happened to pass the Volcanoes National Park. We
actually went there two days ago on a foggy, rainy night. Since it was a
nicer day this time, we decided to go in again to take a few more more
pictures. Before entering the park, I told Rudi to remember filling up
the gas when we leave the park because the lovely little red warning
light had been on for a while, and we were still 36 miles away from the
hotel.
When we were done, it was about 3-4 hours
later... and we completely forgot about the gas. We drove out of the
park, and 3 miles later, I realized we needed to fill up the gas. At
that point, we were driving in the dark with the volcano mountains on my
right looking totally black! We frantically looked up on the GPS
trying to figure out where the nearest gas station was, and finally, the
GPS told us there was indeed one gas station in the area -- 20 miles in
the opposite direction... Seemed like we needed to make a live-death
decision at that point! I would not bore you with Rudi's radical
ideas... the bottom line is -- we decided to drive to the gas station!
It was the longest 20 miles I've ever been through, with nothing around
us except for one gigantic volcano stretching miles and miles LONG!!!
When
we finally arrived at the gas station, it was all dark -- no one was
there. The local police officer's mother-in-law told me "all gas
stations
here close at 6 PM." I was totally puzzled: "What if you need gas
after 6 PM?" "You just don't" she replied. There were endless panic
thoughts in my head at that point, but I was very clear with ONE goal:
get gas -- whatever it takes!!! Thank goodness for 1 kind local lady
(not the officer's mother-in-law) who came to our rescue. She told me
she had 2 gallons of gas at home and she'd need to drive home to get
it. Wow, how could I let her drive home? What if she never comes
back???? But I let her go in trust of human kindness...
Long
story short, she went home not just once, but twice to get proper tools
so we could get the gas in our car!!! With the 2 gallons of gas, the
little red light finally calmed down, we drove through the darkness
quietly and peacefully to the civilization!

Hawaii, the paradise... (4)
Sunday, June 29, 2014
I have a clear sense that the lava fields I sent last night might not have met everyone's definition of a "paradise..." But to me, the uniqueness of the black, shinny lava in such a massive magnitude is beautiful in itself -- makes you feel a piece of land is forming right in front of your eyes, between 1986 and 2011 -- incredibly powerful stuff !!!

Hawaii, the paradise... (3)
It's hard for me to describe (or for you to imagine) how great it feels
to finally have time to catch up on my Hawaii trip photos from November
of 2013...
Today's pictures are not about photography. In fact, the first image was taken with my iPhone. As I went through many unprocessed Hawaii pictures this morning, I had a hard time to decide which topic to pick. There are the amazing ocean waves, volcanoes, beautiful clouds, etc., but I've decided to show you an unique part of the world in Hawaii -- The Lava Fields!!
We went to visit the lava fields on the Big Island on 12/5/2013. When the locals first told us about it, I didn't pay much attention, thought I would just drive-by. But when we got there, I was totally shocked by the endless black, black, shinny lava fields -- they were miles long and more miles wide. Right at the edge of the lava field sat the clear, blue ocean... I immediately fell in love with the place -- it was so raw, so harsh, and yet filled with its unique beauty. Believe it or not, there were actually houses built in the lava field. The locals told us people built houses there only because they wanted to experience life by "living on top of the lava." The property tax there is $25 per year, yeah, $25 per year. Residents have to have a way to process their own drinking water and generate their own electricity. Locals also know exactly which part of the lava was formed in which year. The newer lava in the area ranged from 1986 to 2011 -- it's just amazing that we were so close to the history...
I brought back a piece of 1990 lava for my little Michelle...

Text Message from Dr. Michelle
I
have been deeply troubled by the fact that I am sooooo incredibly busy
all the time, and yet, there are still soooooo many things left undone
every day!
Among
all the STUFF I
need to do, one of them is pretty insane. I literally log all the text
messages between me and Michelle into an Excel file so I don't lose
them. In fact, since 6/7/2009, we've had 4,937 messages. Each is
documented with the date and time of the message. I don't understand
why on earth I didn't keep the messages before June of 2009... Oh, maybe
it was because only when my Blackberry died on me in 2009 did I realize
that I'd just lost all my messages!!! I send the file to Michelle
periodically telling her to read it 20 years from now...
Anyways,
here is the latest exchange from today:
Chelle: 6/12/14 at 4:46 PM:
My
newest patient has esophageal cancer. He was just diagnosed today. He's going
to die within the year, 57 years old -:(
Mom:

My Little Naper (2)
After 18 hours and 999.7 miles, my little Naper finally arrived in Boston yesterday (Sunday, 5/25/14) at 12:30 pm, safe and sound.
As some of you may already know, he was once again a real little trooper during the 18 long hours from Naperville to Boston. It's
been a sentimental trip where I took pictures of him at every stop... I
would take photos with my iPhone and sent them to my friends along with the
following
narratives at each stop:
My handsome little Naper in Indiana!
My lovely little Naper in Ohio, making his way to Boston!
My beautiful little Naper in New York!
After 12 hours and 693 miles, my hard-working little Naper is going to spend the night at this peaceful place
(Liverpool, NY)!
My brave little Naper just came through dense fog and is resting at Little Falls, NY!
My loyal little Naper in MA. Ironically, the car next to Naper is exactly the same as my new car, even has the same color!
After 18 hours and 999.7 miles, my elegant little Naper finally arrived in Boston, safe and sound!
I
asked myself "Do you really need to be so dramatic and sentimental
about everything in life?" That really got me think hard. I don't
believe I am trying to create drama. But rather, because my life has
been simplified
to a point where literally everything I own has a deep purpose and
special meaning, I have become very much attached to them -- to the
very FEW things I have, and my little Naper is one of them!!!
Now Naper is going to be with Michelle for the next 2 years. I only said one simple thing to Michelle: "Love him the way I do!"

My Little Naper
Believe it or not, my little Naper is leaving me!
For
those of you who don't know, Naper is my lovely little white Lexus, and
he has been with me since summer of 2003. He got his cute name when I
had to relocate to Reno for my job in 2004. At the
time, he was the only thing that brought warmth and familiarity to my
life out in the desert... So I name him Naper (abbreviation for
Naperville)!
Over
the past 11 years, we've traveled through rain and snow, and together, we've
thoroughly enjoyed spring flowers and fall colors... It has truly been
an incredible journey. I love my little Naper deeply, and he always
loves me
back with his unwavering loyalty and reliability!!!
Well, Naper is going to Boston next weekend, and he will become Michelle's loyal friend -- I hope!
I
completed a big full service for him this morning making sure
everything is in good condition for Michelle. I also took a few
pictures for him today just so I can remember how incredibly beautiful
and elegant he is...
Here, meet my lovely little Naper!!!
By
the way, for the past 11 years, the 2 little bears have always been in
the back seat with their seat-belts securely fastened. Their excellent
behavior once touched a police officer. When the officer pulled me over
for some stupid reasons, he looked at the bears and smiled... so, I got
a verbal warning instead of a ticket -- thank goodness to my 2 little
bears!!

2013-2014 Class A Photography Competition: 1st Place
I have to say the club competition is a stressful and time consuming event -- you really need to spend time selecting the best images that would score high in the eyes of those judges! Well, at this point, "stress" is the one thing I don't need and "time" is the one thing I don't have. So, I am thinking about not participating in future club competitions.
Regardless, I will continue to pursue photography with my best efforts, which can be translated into getting up early and staying up late and risking my life in the wilderness :-) !
The email below was from April of last year when we ended the 2012-2013 competition year, feels like yesterday…

I
was able to attend my photography club’s annual banquet last night and,
surprisingly, got the attached award. It’s really nothing
but luck and hard work!
I can finally take a little break until the 2013-2014 competitions begin in September 2013 -:)

The 2012-2013 photography club competition year finally ended. It involved 4 competitions
throughout the year
and 293 images. As you may remember,
this year I got moved to the highest level -- Class A, and here is what I
got: First Place in Digital Photography :-)
Special thanks to many of you who provided me with valuable feedback on competition image selections. I would not have
gotten this award without your insight and support.
Thank You!!
