Inspired
by Kyle Bryant’s TED Talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdQnKIoyJkc&sns=em,
I recently became a member of National Ataxia Foundation to help fight a rare condition
called Ataxia. The word
"ataxia" comes from the Greek word "a taxis," meaning
"without order or coordination." Ataxia is caused by neuro-degenerative diseases. Patients will gradually lose control of their balance, physical movements,
and eventually die within 30 years of the onset of the disease.
Similar to ALS, ataxia is a rare neurological disease. About 1 in 10,000 people acquire ataxia genetically and only 4 in 100,000 people worldwide have Dominant Ataxia. Due to this very low disease prevalence and the lack of public awareness, funding for ataxia research has been extremely limited, which is why thousands of ataxia patients are still suffering from their disease progression without any treatment.
The history of ataxia research began with Dr. John W. Schut, the brilliant physician and researcher whose determination to find the cause and cure for ataxia led to the formation of the National Ataxia Foundation in 1957. Now 60 years later, the National Ataxia Foundation continues to fund the best, most relevant ataxia research aimed at moving us closer to a world free of ataxia. This commitment has resulted in important progress in understanding the disease mechanism, gene identification and translational research. National Ataxia Foundation is leading the fight to end ataxia and is a driving force behind breakthroughs to find treatments to stop the disease progression, restore function, and end ataxia forever.
Please join us in the fight to end human suffering from ataxia by donating to NAF’s ataxia research funds (please select the research category: Dominant Ataxia)
