“Shaiqiu” (晒秋) is a traditional agricultural practice in the mountainous regions of southern China, where villagers use open spaces - such as areas in front of and behind their houses, windowsills, and rooftops - to sun-dry crops.
This custom developed due to the scarcity of flat land in mountainous areas. By drying crops such as chili peppers, corn, and hickory nuts, villagers preserved their harvests, and over time this practical activity evolved into a distinctive element of local rural culture. In the ancient village of Huangling, the rugged terrain has created a year-round cycle of Shaiqiu scenes: drying fiddlehead ferns in spring, fruits and vegetables in summer, chili peppers in autumn, and preserved fruits in winter.
