The Handwritten Letter

Wow, the following email was from almost 20 years ago - where did time go???

Believe it or not, I found a hand-written letter from Professor Thomas, mentioned in yellow below. The letter was sent to Rudi, who was in China back then, and it was dated as October 13, 1988 -- 24 days after I arrived in the US. Because the handwriting is hard to recognize, I typed it into the attached Word document. Professor Thomas called me Tang Pei in the letter. That's how I was called in China.

Yeah, we once relied on hand-written letters to communicate with one another, and it took more than 10 days for the letter from China to arrive in the US. We were patient back then, taking time to think, write, and read messages from others that took so long to arrive -- anticipating and appreciating every word in that long-awaited letter...

Cherish today -- tomorrow is likely to be even more unrecognizable!

Subject: 19 years...

It was 19 years ago, on 9/19/88, I arrived in this country and started my life in America.  It's been a great experience.  Looking back, I am grateful for all the opportunities I have had over the past 19 years.  I am particularly thankful for all the help and support I received from my graduate school professor, Dr. Edwin Thomas, during the early and most difficult days of my long journey in America.

The following is an interview Michelle did for school when she was only 10.  I can say that it still accurately reflects my belief today.

For this report, I interviewed my mother who immigrated to this country from China.  She, like most other immigrants, came here for more opportunities to be successful in her career.  She also wanted to provide a better life for her future children.

She came here in 1988 as a graduate student.  Right before the trip to America, she was a graduate student in Beijing.  Her life was not as bad as some immigrants because she knew some English.  In her high school in China, she was taught the American Language.  She was a little scared of her new life she'd have to start.  She didn't know anyone and only had $45.  After the first few weeks, she came to realize that people here were open and friendly.

Fortunately, she did not experience any racism and prejudice.  She made many American friends at her job and they all respect her a great deal.  She says she likes America because you have all kinds of opportunities, and if you work hard, you are sure to succeed.

The Desert Adventure

This desert adventure was first attempted in March 2024. But it had to be cancelled at the last minute due to a strong-wind advisory.

The 2025 desert adventure started with Picture 1 — totally packed and ready to GO!!

This was the first time I camped in the desert — or to be precise, the first time I ever camped. I’d spent countless dark nights out in the desert photographing the night skies, but I’d never actually slept in the wild without the comfort of a hotel bed.

Well, it’s never too late to try NEW things! Honestly, I was quite nervous in the days leading up to the adventure — I had no idea what to expect or how I would ever fall asleep under the stars.

The 2-hour drive along winding hillside roads brought us to the desert just before sunset. Kevin was so proficient at setting up everything — from the campfire to all the cozy furniture. I never imagined having a nice dinner in the desert, but to my delight, we enjoyed homemade sausages, desert stew, s’mores, and mulled wine. WOW!

It happened to be the night of the Geminids Meteor Shower, with over 120 meteors per hour at its peak. The gentle, quiet, dark night was filled with our cheers as meteors streaked across the sky. I have to say — I saw more meteors that night than I had in my entire life.

Sleeping under the stars turned out to be surprisingly peaceful. I remember waking in the middle of the night and seeing countless bright stars above me. They seemed to be looking back, as if they knew I adored them. When I woke a second time, the red clouds had filled the sky, wrapping the desert in a breathtaking glow — it was simply amazing.

Before everyone else woke up, I took a hike through the wilderness for almost 2 hours, alone, hiking and running under soft winds and the warm morning sun. The little desert park wasn’t famous or exotic, and it didn’t require extensive travels to get there. Yet it had its own quiet charm — unassuming, serene, and utterly captivating. I loved it.

Faxi Temple (法喜讲寺)

Faxi Temple is one of the famous Buddhist temples near West Lake in Hangzhou. It was founded during the Five Dynasties period (around year 936–939 AD), and over the centuries, it's been rebuilt and renamed. The name Faxi Temple started in Qing Dynasty.

One of the significant features of Faxi Temple is a stone-carved inscription and dedicatory stele nearby its scripture storage hall. The level of detail is absolutely stunning!

Hongcun (宏村) is an ancient village located in Anhui Province in East China. It's one of the best-preserved Huizhou-style villages in China and has been recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of its beautiful layout, traditional houses, and poetic scenery, it is often called “the village in Chinese paintings.”

The village was first built during the Southern Song Dynasty over 800 years ago. It contains many well-preserved Ming-Qing Dynasty buildings. Huizhou-style architecture from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties is one of China’s most distinctive and elegant traditional architectural styles. It originated in Huizhou (modern-day southern Anhui) and is especially well preserved in village like Hongcun.

Shaiqiu (晒秋)

“Shaiqiu” (晒秋) is a traditional agricultural practice in the mountainous regions of southern China, where villagers use open spaces - such as areas in front of and behind their houses, windowsills, and rooftops - to sun-dry crops.

This custom developed due to the scarcity of flat land in mountainous areas. By drying crops such as chili peppers, corn, and hickory nuts, villagers preserved their harvests, and over time this practical activity evolved into a distinctive element of local rural culture. In the ancient village of Huangling, the rugged terrain has created a year-round cycle of Shaiqiu scenes: drying fiddlehead ferns in spring, fruits and vegetables in summer, chili peppers in autumn, and preserved fruits in winter.

Views from a Divine Eye

When Buddhism came to China more than 2000 years ago, one of the Buddhist teachings referred to the Five Eyes. They are five kinds of "vision" or "wisdom-eyes" that represent different levels of perception and understanding:

1. Fleshly Eye (肉眼) – ordinary human eyesight.
2. Divine Eye (天眼) – the ability to see beyond ordinary sight, including distant or hidden things.
3. Wisdom Eye (慧眼) – the insight into the truth of Dharma and emptiness.
4. Dharma Eye (法眼) – the ability to discern the profound meaning of all Buddhist teachings.
5. Buddha Eye (佛眼) – the all-encompassing, perfect wisdom of a Buddha, seeing reality in its entirety.

I guess, in a way, the attached photos reflected what a Divine Eye can see...

P.S. Drone photography and its place in modern society is a philosophical discussion. Today, I do have a strong reservation - and even opposition - to drone photography.

37 years...

It's that day of the year again - September 19th, the day when I landed in this country 37 years ago.

The essay Michelle wrote below in red from more than two decades ago has been used so many times over the years. Well - it's still true today.

Today, I found the first diary entry I made after landing in this country 37 years ago. I was right - the impact of this deeply cherished journey on my entire life is immeasurable!!

AI Translation below:

1988.9.21 (Wednesday)

All dreams have become reality,
and within this reality,
life itself feels like a dream.

At 4 p.m. on September 19, I arrived in Chicago. It felt as if I were still floating on the plane, completely lost in a dream. Unwittingly, I stepped onto the land I had long yearned for… This is the beginning of a new life. Although I have no idea where this new life will lead me, I deeply realize that its impact on my entire life will be immeasurable!

Amazon Orders: 2002 - 2009

I got an email from Amazon saying my "Amazon Invitee" status will end on 10/1/2025. I didn't even know how Rudi set this up 20+ years ago...

There are various suggested options for me to continue with my free Amazon Prime status. What really freaks me out is - unless I become a new Amazon Prime member on my own, all other options - including joining "My Amazon Family" will cause me to lose all my purchase history over the past 23 years. Not that I care about the 21st century consumerism purchasing habits and history, but looking back on the past two decades, my early Amazon purchases were quite revealing.

Yeah, here are all the orders I made from 2002 to 2009. They are the footprints covering my journey of evolution...

The purchase of my very first Garmin GPS on 2007-3-10 was the monument of my true independence -:)). I could finally drive around without getting LOST!!!

Desert Storm Chasing

It was a 10-day storm chasing trip - hoping to capture dramatic storms and lightning in the southwest deserts.

Summer days were long. We usually got up around 4:30am to catch the sunrise, drove up and down the deserts chasing storms, and then finally returned back to the hotel after 10pm. It was unusually dry this year in the desert. The monsoon season didn't generate mush rainstorms in the southwest. At the end of the exhausting 10-day trip, after driving over 1,000 miles, on the very last day of the trip, I caught ONE lightning in my photo - yeah, it's a very expensive photo in so many ways!!!

This photo deserves to be viewed on a computer - enlarge the lightning portion of the image...

Laptop Crash: 7/23/25

To me, surviving each and every iPhone/Laptop crash feels like being reborn - as if I just came back from death! Each time, I am reminded of what’s most important. I usually come back with a renewed focus, a clear priority, an intense level of discipline to back up everything systematically - OFTEN!!

My laptop Leno died on 7/23/25, out of the blue!! Thanks to a good friend of mine, who has been in the computer hardware business for nearly three decades and was able to give me the last chance to back up my important files. Yeah, Leno was basically being resuscitated, put on a ventilator, undergone a series of surgeries, and finally, came back to life - for a very brief moment…

At that moment, it felt like I came back to life too.

When you realize that your time is limited, you suddenly, truly understand your “priority.”

I just hope I can maintain this level of clarity - even in good times, when there is no crash, no drama…

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, Dr. Michelle!

Here is a clip covering your footsteps from the past 35 years – Wow, what a journey!! Thank you for taking us with you on this incredible ride – it’s been FUN!

Found a little note you wrote at 12 – so precious to look back on the imaginary tale, and thank goodness you landed so close to Coronado Island, California.

“…In her free time, Michelle likes to shop, listen to music and read. She also enjoys figure skating and playing various instruments. “I like to do things that keep me upbeat during the day, and I write at night when it’s quiet and I can see stars.” She also loves to travel and often visits Mackinac Island, Michigan.

She now lives in Las Vegas with her two dogs, Puppy and Founder, working as a lawyer. She owns a beach house on Coronado Island, California and a ranch in Dallas, Texas.”

Love,
Mom

The Rubik's Cube

When I was in China back in February, my cousin's 10-yr old grandson Li gave me a 3x3 Rubik's cube as a gift. It was lined up so perfectly for all 6 sides and was placed in a fancy plastic box.

Little Li is one of the top cube players in his elementary school. He used his cube to show me all the patterns and moves - so elegant and smooth; so fast and incomprehensible... Apparently, all these patterns and moves need to be memorized. I showed real interest while watching his quick hand moves, asked adequate questions, and promised to study it when I have time.

It's been 56 days since I got back home. Today, I made time to study the cube. I considered it as a great opportunity to CHALLENGE myself; to beef up my "declining" learning capabilities; and to start a new memory exercise. Wow, it took me over 3 hours to learn from scratch, and finally, I MADE it!!

My goal is to practice it often; fully memorize all correct moves; and improve speed. Once I can master all above, I'll record my performance and send it back to little Li, my cube teacher -:))

Greenland

Wow, for so many years traveling to so many places, I've never felt that planning a trip can be so unbearably difficult.

Greenland has been on top of my travel list for MANY years. No, I'm not looking for a cruse-ship trip circling along the shorelines. I wanted to stay on the island and take the small vassal out at night to Disko Bay - the pure arctic - to photograph the biggest icebergs in the world under the midnight sun... Just imagine that!! And - if needed - the attached photos can help you imagine.

My first planned trip to Greenland for 7/2020 was cancelled on 4/19/2020 due to the global pandemic. I posted attachment 1 on my Facebook to document the heartbreaking event.

Since 2020, I have been searching for photography groups that can organize similar type of trips with the same amazing scenery. After exploring all possible itineraries of National Geographic expeditions (my only other unwilling option), I decided to go with the group that can take us on a small vassal to see the BIG icebergs!!

The exciting trip is in early August 2025, and I booked it in 2024! Guess what happened this time? There are no tickets for my scheduled arrival and departure dates. In addition, the hotel accommodations are very limited outside of the group travel dates. Wow, what a bummer!!

After countless struggles with a different combination of less desirable traveling schedules, finally, today, 4/19/2025, I cancelled my 2nd Greenland trip. At this point, I don't know if I still have the courage to say: "Some day, Greenland, some day, I will go visit you!" Maybe I do need to downgrade my dream trip to a Greenland expedition by National Geographic.
