Today's pictures are not about photography. In fact, the first image was taken with my iPhone. As I went through many unprocessed Hawaii pictures this morning, I had a hard time to decide which topic to pick. There are the amazing ocean waves, volcanoes, beautiful clouds, etc., but I've decided to show you an unique part of the world in Hawaii -- The Lava Fields!!
We went to visit the lava fields on the Big Island on 12/5/2013. When the locals first told us about it, I didn't pay much attention, thought I would just drive-by. But when we got there, I was totally shocked by the endless black, black, shinny lava fields -- they were miles long and more miles wide. Right at the edge of the lava field sat the clear, blue ocean... I immediately fell in love with the place -- it was so raw, so harsh, and yet filled with its unique beauty. Believe it or not, there were actually houses built in the lava field. The locals told us people built houses there only because they wanted to experience life by "living on top of the lava." The property tax there is $25 per year, yeah, $25 per year. Residents have to have a way to process their own drinking water and generate their own electricity. Locals also know exactly which part of the lava was formed in which year. The newer lava in the area ranged from 1986 to 2011 -- it's just amazing that we were so close to the history...
I brought back a piece of 1990 lava for my little Michelle...

By the way, the second picture was taken at the sunset when the last light of the day hit the lava...
