My Tennis Season

Last year, I played tennis outdoor from 6/7/22 to 11/26/22 for a total of 77 times. I considered it as my "tennis season."

This year, the season started early on 4/8/23, and it lasted all the way through 12/15/23, for a total of 158 times. I'm not sure if this is the END of my "tennis season". If it goes into 2024, how would I define the "season?"

Nonetheless, tennis is a THING for me now. Looking forward to the next season -- or the continuation of this season into 2024.

Happy Holidays to all!

Social Media Diet

The email below reminded me of how disciplined I used to be... Wow, 20 days of ditching social media totally and completely -- how COOL is that!!

Well, I finally started my "social media diet" again -- first time since 9/10/2022. Not sure what happened to me over the past 14 months, but anyhow, it once again brought me back to my sanctuary -- the calm, peaceful and quiet world where you can really listen to yourself and reflect...

All of the sudden, I have so much more time too. Finally finished processing all the photos from Canada, Red River Gorge, and my backyard.

Attached are the photos from "my backyard" -:))

Due to recent scandals in China, I've learned a new Chinese phrase called "社会死亡."  The English translation is "Social Death."  It means: to avoid the spread of the scandal, the person involved has been blocked from all social media channels. Therefore, socially, the person is considered "dead," as no one can find or contact him/her.

In my case, I have been practicing voluntary "social death" periodically over the past 7 years. The first time was the most dramatic. I spent a 3-day weekend (5/2/14 to 5/4/14) without a cell phone, a computer, a TV; without my car, or any other modern devices. I simply stayed home -- made tea, cooked meals, read books and walked around the neighborhood... It was a profound experience, with a lot of inconvenience, of course.

Since then, to avoid too much disruption in life, my "social death" experience has been limited to only shutting down social media for 1-2 weeks. Each time, I loved the serenity it brought to my soul...

Well, I just did it again for the past 20 days, which was the longest time of all. The calmness was incredible!!

Social Death is really not as horrifying as many have imagined. You live in your own world and mine your own business -- the simplicity of life is lovely. When you finally decide to reemerge, you'd realize that you haven't missed much after all. In my case, over hundreds of headlines and stories for the past 20 days, maybe only two things were note worthy: Omicorn and Inflation.

Omicron: I've gotten my booster shot, what more can I do?

Inflation: Here is my little strategy. The rest is out of my hands. Why worry???  Haha!

Let There Be History

Wow, I found this from 1996-7-19!! Thoughts?

1. I used to be so organized. Kept this nicely in a file folder -- for 27 years.

2. The world has changed so profoundly. We don't realize it until one day, when we look back...

3. Never neglect the fact that we are living in a history-making time of humanity. Cherish life and be present!

Edith Cavell Meadows

This is the 3rd time I’ve visited the Angel Glacier since 9/2011. Sadly, each time, the glacier is noticeably smaller - the angel is almost unrecognizable now…

Throughout the entire trip, I see shrinking glaciers, disappearing snow mountains, drying-up rivers and dying trees. The ecosystem here is changing - undeniably!

Pocaterra Ridge Trail, Canada: 2023-9-19

Chelle,

This photo deserves a special spot in our history book. Please keep it somewhere SAFE.

It was taken on my 35-yr anniversary of living in America -- pretty incredible!! It's impossible to imagine from 35 years ago when I first landed in this country that I would have the opportunity to hike with such an accomplished beautiful soul 35 years later...

LOVE!!

3,042 Days Later

3,042 days later, we made it up together to the top of Sentinel Pass. What an incredible and memorable hike!!

Sentinel Pass is the most famous hiking trail in Banff. 7.3 miles out and back with 2,451 feet elevation gain. Grade = Hard / Difficult. Took us 6.5 hours, about 22,500 steps.

Great experience and incredible views. Hard for me to believe how crowded the trail was - honestly, is it true that so MANY people are willing to endure the long hike, the physical and mental suffering to be close to nature?

September 19, 2023

Today is the 35th anniversary of me being in this country - what a journey!!

So grateful for everyone here, who has helped me in various ways throughout the years.

So grateful for everything, especially for being able to raise Dr. Michelle in this country...

Looking forward to the next 35 years!!

It was 19 years ago, on 9/19/88, I arrived in this country and started my life in America.  It's been a great experience.  Looking back, I am grateful for all the opportunities I have had over the past 19 years.  I am particularly thankful for all the help and support I received from my graduate school professor, Dr. Edwin Thomas, during the early and most difficult days of my long journey in America.

The following is an interview Michelle did for school when she was only 10.  I can say that it still accurately reflects my belief today.

For this report, I interviewed my mother who immigrated to this country from China.  She, like most other immigrants, came here for more opportunities to be successful in her career.  She also wanted to provide a better life for her future children.

She came here in 1988 as a graduate student.  Right before the trip to America, she was a graduate student in Beijing.  Her life was not as bad as some immigrants because she knew some English.  In her high school in China, she was taught the American Language.  She was a little scared of her new life she'd have to start.  She didn't know anyone and only had $45.  After the first few weeks, she came to realize that people here were open and friendly.

Fortunately, she did not experience any racism and prejudice.  She made many American friends at her job and they all respect her a great deal.  She says she likes America because you have all kinds of opportunities, and if you work hard, you are sure to succeed.

The Historic Day

Today, for the first time in over 1,270 days (since the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020), I went to a department store. In addition, I went in without a face mask. It took true courage to do so.

Not sure about you, but this was totally a Historic Day for me!! Felt very strange to be in a department store with soooo many back-to-school shoppers AND without my face mask.

I believe the pandemic has fundamentally changed my social landscape -- which might be necessary for the entire humanity going forward!

Dr. Michelle's Cooking History

Do you know any Mom who'd keep track of all the dishes her kids cook over a 10 year period?

Well, I don't want to be the one breaking the world record here, but I did keep photos of every dish Michelle sent me over the past 10.5 years - starting from her medical school days through current.

The records go from 2013-1-3 to 2023-7-20 covering 10 years and 7 months. Over this period of time, Michelle has sent me 72 photos of the dishes she cooked. I keep these photos in a special folder called "Michelle Cooking" with each dish accurately dated. They are so precious only because Michelle, like her Mom, doesn't particularly enjoy cooking.

Attached are 6 sample dishes... Pay attention to the progression of her cooking skills-:)

The Memorable Hike in the Rockies

If the hike up to Crater Lake in Aspen is considered as "strenuous," I have a hard time to best describe the hike to Sky Pond at Rocky Mountain National Park. It's rated by hikers as the most worthwhile hike inside the park -- totaling 11.3 miles and 8 hours round trip.

It's not just about the miles or the hours, it's about the difficulty to reach to the top -- the rocky, slippery terrains, the snow-covered narrow trails cutting through the sliding mountains, the easily missed turns on the trail due to the deep snow... plus a 1200 feet gain in elevation.

Coming back down the snowy mountains was even more challenging as the spikes on my hiking boots failed to provide firm support when the slope of the mountains was so deep.

A week before this adventure, a hiker wrote the following about his ordeal hiking up to Sky Pond:

The trail to Sky Pond was very icy and snow-packed the entire way from the trailhead, with deeper snow-pack the further up the trail. Past The Loch, the snow was very deep, all the way up to Timberline Falls. Timberline Falls was icy, very slippery, with very cold, rushing water. The waterfall was treacherous with slippery rocks and frigid water. Coming down was even more frightening.

Nonetheless, here I am with the photos of Sky Pond in perfect condition -- a huge part of the lake was still frozen and the snow was still on the surrounding mountains...

Thoughts on Travel

Driving from Aspen to Estes Park turned out to be a high-wire act.

The first 30% was pure joy - the winding roads through snow mountains are unbelievably scenic. Aspens in the spring are gorgeous! The little green leaves are so lavish, so bright. Shining through sunlight brings renewed freshness to the world!

The next 30% was nothing but pure danger. Weather conditions in mountains are very unpredictable - just like a little kid, full of randomness!

Part of Highway 70 is a winding road. All of a sudden, heavy raindrops started beating my windshield. Cars and trucks were all in panic mode - some trying to changes lanes; some trying to slow down and some trying to rush ahead of other cars - pure chaos!

Then, I saw white stuff all over the highway - on the sides, between lanes, everywhere - a lot! Initially I thought, maybe, just maybe, a truck accidentally unloaded all the salt on the highway. But the stuff stretched out for about 2 miles - then I realized it was hail - a very heavy hailstorm occurred right before my car got there!

It was so crazy, so dangerous, I had to turn on my emergency tail-lights attempting to avoid other cars smashing onto me…

The remaining drive was calm...

Human being’s adaptability is unmeasurable. They can literally switch seamlessly from pure joy to pure panic to pure calmness during one event. To me, it’s all part of the human experience. When traveling, everything is super condensed - like a double espresso in 1 shot! That's why we travel - to experience!!

They've finally arrived...

With high anticipation and frequent checks at the swan pond, the long-awaited swan babies have finally arrived. Cute and adorable - 7 of them!!

I tend to believe that photography is mostly luck. Today, the swan babies weren't in the right place under the ideal light with the perfect posture... You just have to be settled with whatever you can get.
