My English

Occasionally, people would kindly comment on my English and remind me that I can actually communicate :-)

Yeah, looking back, for the past decade, I've put a lot of effort in trying to improve my English.  Part of the motivation came from the fact that I would NEED to adequately communicate with Michelle's middle school teachers, friends, friends' parents, and then, her high school and college friends... and then, finally, her med school friends!  Over the past 11 years, I have been frequently reminded that my English needs improvement -- thank goodness for all the notes from my little Michelle and her diligent work to set up the right classes for me.  I am forever grateful for having such a thoughtful, logical, creative and disciplined teacher!!

The English Correction Program
4/21/2002 (Age 11)

Dear Ms. Tang,

Thank you for choosing the English Correction Program!  You have chosen Grammar for your subject.  Your first class will be on Sunday, 4/28/02, at 7:00 p.m.  You will be learning mostly about how to communicate with other people using correct grammar and you will also learn the correct tenses of word (past tense, future tense, etc.).  For each class, you will need to bring with you a sheet of notebook paper and a pencil.  I suggest that you get a notebook just for English classes if you decide to take more courses.  I will bring all other necessities for the class.  For this class, there will also be certain benefits and offers with your try out course.

1.  This is a FREE course.
2.  You will receive coupons for a variety of things if you do well in this class.
3.  You may stop taking the class if you decide it is not right for you.
4.  I will take into consideration any suggestions you have.
5.  You will be able to have fun during classes.
6.  You will learn MORE!!!

Please do not be late for class and arrive with your materials.  If for any reason you cannot make it to your class for the day, please contact me before hand.

Sincerely,
Michelle Zhang, Teacher

Michelle actually ran a monthly newspaper <<The Nutmeg Times>> for about 18 months when she was 11.

Mom,

In order to make "The Nutmeg Times" more interesting to read, I will need some replies to my papers.  As I said before, there is a folder for replies, comments, etc.  Please take advantage of it and send some replies, comments, submissions, etc.  Make an effort to make our monthly newspaper better than ever.  You will get credit and everyone will know that you can write, too!  Think of all our loyal fans and please contribute to the making of our paper.  We are especially in need of topics for our regular issues!  And I know that you are able to write GREAT poems, so please try to write a few for the Nutmeg Times.  But remember that I cannot promise to put it in the paper, but I still encourage you to try.

Sincerely,

Michelle Zhang
Reporter, Writer, Printer and Editor in Chief of the Nutmeg Times

Not sure why she called herself a "Printer."  The person who is responsible for printing the paper?  Why a Printer???  I didn't catch it 11 years ago... but now that my English has improved, I wonder if that's a mistake...

Youth

Youth
Samuel Ullman

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

My Isabela

It's been 9 days since we came back from Puerto Rico, the place filled with amazing beaches, waves and wonders.  Out of the over 600 images captured there, more than 98% were from My Isabela.
